Today’s work environment is ruthlessly demanding. We need to constantly evaluate ourselves to assess our thought patterns, behaviours and skills to ensure that we remain relevant. A mind-set of lifelong learning and curiosity is essential to keep us “career-fit”.
Many of us have coaches to challenge, guide and educate us so that we meet our physical fitness plans and goals. In much the same way, personal coaching can provide tremendous benefit by helping us understand our patterns of behaviour, shift our mindsets and develop our leadership skills.
Traditional performance appraisal systems focus on measuring the achievement of specific metrics and improving performance. They are carried out by the line manager and are usually one-on-one. Talent Management shifts the focus from pure performance to a combination of performance and potential. It also includes the full employee journey from recruitment to their transition through the organisation following upskilling and training.
Each level in the organisation evaluate the level below, which allows for a more balanced outcome as several people will usually give input on the person being evaluated. This process allows for cross functional career mapping and increased awareness of the talent within the organisation.
Employees often develop increased awareness of their options within the talent pipeline and many enjoy the ability to be rated on their potential as well as performance.
